Akoya Pearls
The two largest producers of akoya pearls are Japan and China. Akoya pearls have body colors ranging from white to cream to yellow with possible overtone colors of rose, silver, and green. Akoya pearl sizes range from less than 5mm to 9.5mm in size. Larger Akoya pearls are possible, but less frequent. Akoya pearls are more valuable than their freshwater cousins because of their beauty and supply.
Fact or Fiction: "Akoya" DOES NOT mean "saltwater" in Japanese. This is a myth that is commonly repeated.
