Pearls, and hence pearl jewelry, have been sought by royalty for thousands of years. From Cleopatra and Mark Anthony to the British royals to the Persians and far beyond, natural pearls have been a sign of riches and distinction. Yet, throughout history, pearls had remained a mystery to mankind.

The secret of blister pearls was finally unlocked around 700 years ago by the Chinese. Round cultured pearls however, were much more elusive to achieve. In the mid 1900's, Tokichi Nishikawa, Tatsuhei Mise, and Kokichi Mikimoto all worked to develop/culture the first round cultured pearl, the most famous of which was Kokichi Mikimoto.

Pearls are now cultured throughout the world including such places as Japan, China, Vietnam, Australia, French Polynesia, and the Sea of Cortez. While white, round pearls are what come to mind for most people, pearls come in vast assortment of colors, sizes, and shapes.
